Janitor´s Protest Camp

Since last September 595 janitors of the Ministry of Finance, all of them women, have been fighting by any means against their, Troika imposed, “suspension” from their jobs. Their struggle has become iconic for its determination and they have won the hearts and minds and the support of the Greek people. The female workers have taken on the streets daily, they have gathered outside the Ministry of Finance, made unannounced symbolic visits of “cleaning” in tax offices, chased the representatives of Troika, they stood by other unfolding worker’s struggles, coordinated their struggle with the rest of public sector employees who are under “suspension”. They even collided with riot police, when a squad of the latter were employed to remove 4 cleaners from the Ministry of Finance, sending two women injured in the hospital.
The 595 cleaners are about to be sucked on the 18 May, day of the local elections in Greece and one week before the elections for the EU parliament. They decided to escalate their struggle by camping, since last Wednesday 7 May, outside the entrance of the Greek Ministry of Finance until they have their job positions restored and until all of them return back to their work. Their protest-camp has met the solidarity and mobilisation of trade unions, political groups, artists and grass-root solidarity structures that cook and support practically their struggle.
The janitors’ struggle is indicative of the fate that the Troika regime wants to impose all over Europe against the working classes, as Solidarity for All we proposed them and they have agreed their action / protest camp to be part of the European Days of Action. It is true, that we do not know if the camp will still exist until the 15– 25 of May, or if it would have been evicted. However, we estimate that it will be very difficult for the government to attempt their eviction on the eve of elections, an act that will highlight the struggle of the cleaners and will stain the picture of “success story” or “Grecovery” that the pro-Troika government and parties want to paint.
